Wupatki National Monument is proud to welcome Sarah Crowley, an accomplished Alaskan artist and creator of Raining Joy Arts, as its Artist-in-Residence from January 24 to February 8. During her residency, Crowley will focus on exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Wupatki, Walnut Canyon and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monuments, capturing their natural and cultural significance through her art.
An artist residency provides creatives with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in inspiring environments, allowing them to produce works that reflect the spirit of a specific location. At Wupatki, Sarah Crowley will be drawing on her expertise as a nature-inspired artist to celebrate the monument’s beauty and its deep historical and cultural connections. Her goal is to foster community and amplify the voices of past visitors, park staff and other stakeholders, weaving their stories into her creative process.
Raining Joy Arts, founded by Sarah Crowley, is a vibrant celebration of nature’s beauty. From her home in Alaska, Crowley creates bold and colorful artwork that connects people to wild places, offering items such as custom paintings, prints, cards, stickers, and more. Her work resonates deeply with nature lovers, adventurers and those seeking meaningful reminders of the natural world.
Through this residency, Crowley hopes to honor the unique identities of Wupatki, Walnut Canyon and Sunset Crater Volcano by creating art that reflects the voices and stories of those who hold these spaces dear. The resulting custom art keepsakes will be available for purchase in the Western Parks National Association gift shops at each park, allowing visitors to take home a meaningful piece of their experience.
