A train engine overheated and caught fire near Fimbrez Estates in west Flagstaff on Thursday morning, according to a post from the Flagstaff Fire Department.

The blaze caused significant smoke impacts across parts of Flagstaff, but the onboard fire suppression system successfully activated and had the situation under control by the time FFD crews arrived.

Crews remained on scene throughout the day Thursday, but there was no spread to nearby wildland areas.

According to the National Weather Service, a lower inversion kept smoke closer to the ground than normal, though afternoon winds were expected to help clear out the area a bit. FFD recommended limiting exposure to the smoke until the impacts were reduced.
