The Coconino County Elections Department announced on Wednesday, April 16, that it was recognized for excellence in election administration within the Contingency Planning: Exemplary Contingency Planning and Emergency Response Efforts category for Small/Medium Jurisdictions.

Also known as the “Clearies, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) presents the awards program annually to celebrate the work of election offices across the country.

Now in its ninth year, the Clearies honored programs that took place during the 2024 presidential election year.

The Coconino County Elections Department’s Situational Awareness Training for Poll Workers, developed in partnership with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, was one of 53 programs nationally recognized. Launched prior to the November 2024 general election, the training focused on emergency preparedness at polling places across one of the largest and most remote counties in the U.S.

The approach addressed the unique security challenges posed by Coconino County’s geography and limited emergency response resources.

"Receiving the Clearie Award is a testament to the dedication and innovation of our entire elections team," said Coconino County Elections Director Eslir Musta. "This national recognition underscores Coconino County’s commitment to enhancing election processes and ensuring voter confidence through continuous improvement and collaboration."

The Clearies assist in fulfilling the EAC’s mission to serve as a clearinghouse for election administration information under the Help America Vote Act. The EAC is an independent, bipartisan federal agency solely focused on election administration.

Submissions were judged on innovation, sustainability, outreach, cost-effectiveness, replicability and the generation of positive results.
