Traveling down to the Valley over the weekend, athletes from BASIS Flagstaff, Coconino High School, Flagstaff High School and Northland Prep Academy competed on Friday and Saturday in the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Division III and V track and field championships.

As a team, the D-III Flagstaff girls produced the highest finish with a third-place result, while the Flagstaff boys team landed in fourth, just a half-point behind third-place Salpointe Catholic. The BASIS Flagstaff girls team concluded the D-V meet in ninth place, while the Northland Prep boys team tied for 14th in that division.

Flagstaff junior Alex Bland earned gold in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 9:19.70, while the BASIS Flagstaff 4x800m relay team of Macey Conklin, Arribella Gundersen, Jasmine Hall and Samantha Mullaney took gold with a time of 10:23.59.

BASIS Flagstaff

In addition to contributing to the top finish in the 4x800m relay, Hall impressed across the longest distances for the Yetis while running at Red Mountain High School in Mesa.

Contributing 20 points as an individual, Hall finished second in the 800m with a 2:20.42, third in the 1600m in 5:19.10 and third in the 3200m at 11:37.90. Hall, a junior, finished fifth in the D-IV cross country championships in November and took third in the 800m run last May.

Mullaney, a junior, added another five points for her finishes in the 1600m and 3200m. Running a 5:38.24 in the 1600m, Mullaney took eighth overall in addition to a fifth-place finish in the 3200m run with a 12:10.43. 

Coconino

Scoring 13 total points as a team, the Coconino girls were led by senior Wylan Smith and sophomore Kate Wesche at Deer Valley High School in Glendale.

Smith earned a silver medal in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.39, jumping up a spot from her third-place time during the preliminary round. Wesche also scored in that event, running a 49.79 to take eighth place. Smith then added more points in the 100m hurdles, improving from eighth in the prelims to place seventh with a time of 16.31. On the field, Smith took another seventh-place finish with a throw of 33.17 meters in javelin. 

On the boys side, junior Jackson Davis cleared a height of 1.83 meters to place eighth in high jump. Senior Colton Buckingham just missed scoring for the Panthers as well, finish ninth in javelin with a throw of 44.06 meters.

Flagstaff

Bland's championship in the 3200m was just one of multiple scoring finishes for the junior at the D-III meet at Deer Valley.

The junior also finished second in the 1600m with a time of 4:20.76 and fourth in the 800m in 1:55.63. Sophomore Yohanes Van Meerten and junior Elijah Talkalai also scored for the Eagles' distance runners. Finishing fifth in the 1600m with a 4:24.39 and second in the 3200m with a 9:22.14, Van Meerten finished with 12 individual points behind Bland's 23. Talkalai finished just behind Bland in the 800m run, taking fifth with a time of 1:57.01.

The Flagstaff boys 4x800m relay team also scored for the Eagles, placing fourth with a time of 8:02.48.

In sprints, Parker Clifford took home a pair of fourth-place finishes as he ran a 10.97 in the finals of the 100m dash and a 22.33 in the finals of the 200m dash. On the field, the Eagles added another 5.5 points of their 59.5 total as junior Theo Ciochetti took fifth after clearing 3.96 meters in pole vault and sophomore Carson Tucker finished seventh by clearing 3.66 meters.

On the girls side, senior Olivia Baker and junior Taylor Biggambler scored nearly half of the Eagles' points in the two longest distance races. In the 1600m run, Baker finished fourth with a time of 5:14.54 and Biggambler took fifth in 5:14.78. The two medaled in the 3200m and finished almost simultaneously, with a silver for Baker in 11:20.27 and a bronze for Biggambler in 11:20.29.

Flagstaff's girls scored in two relays, with a bronze for the 4x800m team with a time of 9:58.37 and a sixth-place finish for the 4x400m team in 4:14.16. 

In high jump, senior Rachel Hagerman's jump of 1.63 meters earned her a silver medal, with senior Teagan Martin's 1.57-meter jump earning her a bronze. Senior Cody Langdon finished sixth in the event with a jump of 1.47 meters. Flagstaff came up with another silver medal in pole vault as senior Audrey Ketter cleared 3.58 meters, and Langdon nearly scored in the event as well with a height of 2.74 meters to finish ninth.

Northland Prep

Two of the Northland Prep boys relay teams scored at the D-V meet in Mesa, including a bronze medal.

Running an 8:33.20 in the 4x800m relay, Delani Hanson, Emilio Haubert, David Hayes and Henry Wilder took third place. Hanson also joined Ian Karren, Aaron Nicol and Jackson Thomas to run a 3:30.91 in the 4x400m relay for a fifth-place finish.

The Spartans earned another bronze medal in javelin as senior Samuel Cutlip hit 46.69 meters with his best throw.
