The Northern Arizona women's tennis team beat the hosting Portland State Vikings, 6-1, on Sunday to win its eight consecutive match.
Daryna Shoshyna and Elen Jantacova got a doubles win on court one, 6-2. Portland State won a match on court two, but Northern Arizona clinched the doubles point with a victory from the No. 3 pair of Andrea Noguera and Ruslana Kovalenko, 7-6.
The Lumberjacks who won in singles were Shoshyna, Jantacova, Kovalenko, Patrycja Niewiadomska and Laura Duhl.
Shoshyna won her first singles set, then dropped the second. She prevailed, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, improving her singles record to 13-1.
Niewiadomska, who remains undefeated at the No. 2 position at 7-0, won in three sets at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. She dropped the first set, 6-3, then won the next two, 6-0, 6-1.Â
Duhl won her match, 6-3, 6-1 and Jantacova won by the same score as her teammate. Jantacova is now 10-3 in singles and Duhl is 8-2.
At the No. 6 spot, Kovalenko won her singles match in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. She moved her record as a Lumberjack to 5-3.
Northern Arizona's overall team record is now 11-3, and the program remains undefeated in the Big Sky Conference standings at 5-0.
Northern Arizona will take on the Montana Grizzlies in Flagstaff on Saturday.
Men's tennis
Northern Arizona lost in a close battle to the UTSA Roadrunners, 4-3, in Albuquerque on Saturday.
Northern Arizona lost the doubles point as the Roadrunners won matches on court one and court three. The match on court three went into a tiebreaker, with Northern Arizona's Semen Agynskyy and Takumi Katsuda falling, 7-6(3). The Northern Arizona No. 2 doubles team of Dani Torres and Piotr Galus were the only duo to win, 6-3.
Torres won in singles, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, improving to a 10-4 record in singles.
Katsuda won his match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. He moved his singles record to 10-4 overall and 2-2 when playing at the No. 5 spot in the lineup.
At the No. 6 position, Mati Lange got his fourth win as a Lumberjack. The freshman won, 6-3, 6-0. Lange is now 4-8 in singles.
The loss moved the Lumberjacks' record to 11-8. They will look to bounce back against Eastern Washington on April 4 in Cheney, Washington.
Track and field
Northern Arizona concluded the opening weekend of the outdoor season Saturday by setting four new all-time top 10 marks at the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson.
The Northern Arizona women set three new top 10 marks Saturday, led by LiNay Perry winning the 400-meters with a time of 52.77 for a new personal best that ranks third all-time in program history. In her 100-meter hurdle debut, Sydnie Watkins ran the 10th-fastest time in program history, clocking 14.37. The women's 4x100-meter relay team also sneaked into the list, clocking 45.61.
A day after setting two new top 10 marks in both the discus and the hammer throw, Desmond Lott collected his third of the weekend in the shot put, tossing 17.10 meters -- which ranks 10th all-time at Northern Arizona.
On the track for the men, the 4x100m relay team placed fifth with a time of 40.65. Also in the sprints, Luke Yruretagoyena was the top finisher in the men's 400m with a time of 48.21. Josiah Johnson placed 10th in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.60. Lamar Smith and Khamis Hassan placed eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 100m, with Smith clocking 10.55 and Hassan running 10.57.
Watkins also came close to another top 10 mark in the 100m, placing 15th in 11.89. The women's 4x400m relay team placed seventh with a time of 3:50.40. The men ran two 4x400m relay teams, placing sixth in 3:15.55 and ninth in 3:21.16.
Northern Arizona will split squads as the distance runners will head to the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, California, and the sprinters, jumpers and throwers will all compete at the UNLV Rebel ELITE in Las Vegas April 4-5.
