One of the hardest concepts to teach to our young (and old)
and even ourselves, is that we can change our behavior simply
by changing the way we think.
Sound too simple?
Perhaps planting an attitude garden can help. And what better
time to plant, or simply weed that existing garden, than springtime.
Here are some suggestions for your attitude garden:
Plant a two rows of tomatoes Tomatoes have a reputation for outproducing
the needs of the grower...thus prompting us to share! \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/
\(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/
Plant one row of zucchini squash Zucchini squash can remind us to squash gossip, squash
grumbling, and squash selfishness. And, like tomatoes,
zucchini often outproduces the needs of the grower,
thus another opportunity to share our gifts. \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/
Plant four rows of lettuce Lettuce be faithful, lettuce be kind, lettuce be patient.
Lettuce can remind us to make efforts to get along with others. \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/
\(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/
\(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/
\(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/
Plant one row of broccoli Not everyone likes broccoli. When we plant a row of
broccoli in our attitude garden it might help remind us that
not everyone will like how we think, or act. And that's OK. \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/
Plant one row of green beans While quite low in calories (just 44 calories in a whole cup),
green beans are loaded with nutrients. And they come in all
shapes and sizes. Possibly reminding us that just because
someone is different, it doesn't make them bad. \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/ \(/
There are probably other things you may want to plant in
your attitude garden. Things that will help keep your thinkin'
from stinkin'. Spring is especially a great time to start. Prepare
the soil, think of what you want to accomplish with your garden,
then plant the attitude motivators you need.
"The greatest revolution of our generation
is the discovery that human beings,
by changing the inner attitudes of their minds,
can change the outer aspects of their lives."
............William James (1842-1910)

One of the best we've seen on attitude:
Tiger-Tiger, Is It True?: Four Questions to Make You Smile Again
by Byron Katie (2009, Hay House, 14.95/hardback)
This story is about a little tiger who thinks that his whole world
is falling apart: his parents don't love him, his friends have abandoned him, and life is unfair. But a wise turtle asks him
four questions, and everything changes. He realizes that all
his problems are not caused by things, but by his "thoughts"
about things; and that when he questions his thoughts, life
becomes wonderful again. This is a heartwarming story with
a powerful message that can transform the lives of even
very young children. Byron Katie's wisdom-filled words and
Hans Wilhelm's vivid, magical illustrations combine to make
a book destined to become one of the classics of children's
literature. Color. Grades K-5 (actually all ages).
