Northern Arizona's Dani Torres was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis following a 4-0 weekend to close out the regular season, helping the Lumberjacks clinch the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.
Torres led Northern Arizona at the top of the lineup over the weekend. The Lumberjacks ended the season on a five-match win streak and undefeated, 10-0, at home. They also had a perfect 8-0 conference record.
Torres and doubles partner Piotr Galus kicked off the weekend winning the doubles point for the Lumberjacks with a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 court over Sacramento State's Henry Lamchinniah and Gur Libal. Torres later defeated Lamchinniah in singles play as well, clinching the match for Northern Arizona at 4-0 with back-to-back 6-2 sets at the No. 1.
When Northern Arizona took on the Montana State Bobcats on Saturday, Torres and Galus once again brought in a doubles victory, this time against Dmitry Bezborodov and Andre Stewart at the No. 1 spot. Torres closed out the match for the Lumberjacks as he defeated Bezborodov in a 6-1, 7-6 (3) final.
Torres improved to 15-4 in overall singles play, with all 15 victories coming at the No. 1 flight while improving to 17-2 in overall doubles play.
Track and field
The Lumberjacks are spending time in California this week in four different meets.
The distance runners, sprinters and jumpers started at the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific, on Wednesday and will conclude competition Friday. The meet will be streamed on Flotrack.
On Thursday, the throwers will compete at the Pacific Coast Invitational hosted by Long Beach State.
A select group of sprinters will also be in action at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday and Saturday. The Lumberjacks will conclude competition at the Beach Invitational also hosted by Long Beach State on Friday and Saturday.
The Lumberjacks were last in action on April 4 and 5 at the Stanford Invitational and UNLV Rebels Elite. There, Northern Arizona had a combined 14 new all-time top-10 program marks, including a pair of Big Sky records from Karrie Baloga in the 5,000-meters and Elise Stearns in the 10,000m.
As a team, Northern Arizona owns the top five spots in the Big Sky in the women's 5000m and the men's 10,000m. On a national level, David Mullarkey ranks third in the country in the 10,000m, and Drew Bosley ranks sixth.
