A fire broke out at the Centerwood Apartments building in Sunnyside shortly after midnight on Monday morning, spreading to the building’s second floor before the Flagstaff Fire Department was able to extinguish it.

No injuries were reported, but five families were displaced by the blaze and are receiving assistance from the local Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

According to the fire department, the fire was reported at 1721 N. Center St. around 1:45 a.m. on Monday, June 16. Six units responded, discovering what the department as “heavy fire conditions� on the first floor and flames reaching the second floor.

Although one occupant was reportedly forced to exit through a second-story window, all of the building’s occupants were ultimately unharmed.

Georgi Donchetz, regional communications director for the American Red Cross, stated in an email that the organization was assisting 13 individuals with temporary lodging and replacement of medications lost in the fire.

The Flagstaff Fire Department thanked the police department, Guardian Medical Transport, Summit Fire and Medical District and Highlands Fire District for contributing to the emergency response.

The department also urged all Flagstaff residents to inspect and test smoke detectors in their homes. “Smoke alarms save lives,� a statement emphasized.
