The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office cold case unit investigates dozens of unsolved rapes, murders and disappearances — some dating back more than 50 years.
Former Arizona Daily Sun News Team Leader Larry Hendricks brought their hard work to light in 2013 and 2014 during his Cold Case Close-up series. Here are just a few the cases that remain unsolved.
1975: White Male Adult

This is a composite sketch of skeletal remains found near Meteor Crater on April 19, 1975. Two ranch hands tripped over the remains while they were rounding up up a wayward pig. The identity of the man, likely murdered, is still unknown.

1972: Terry Lee Arnold

The body of Terry Arnold was found July 27, 1972 in Coconino County north of Cameron. The cause of death was multiple stab wounds. Arnold had last been seen alive in Flagstaff on July 21, 1972. His killer was never caught.

1971: Merritt “Slick� McAlister

A photo of the Toonerville Trading Post run by Merritt and Pearl McAlister in 1971, near where Twin Arrows is now. Merritt was shot to death during a robbery Aug. 30, 1971. His wife was shot in the head but survived.

1966: Julius Chee

This is a photo of the crime scene in Camp Townsend where the body of Julius Chee was found July 6, 1966. Chee was in Flagstaff at the annual Pow Wow over the July 4 weekend. He went out drinking the night of July 5, 1966. One of his drinking buddies fund his body the next day. The cause of death was blunt-force trauma to the head.

1965: Jose Perez

An exterior photo of the Williams home of retired Basque sheepherder Jose Perez, who was brutally murdered on the night of Feb. 1, 1965. He was found beaten with his own cane, his throat cut and with 36 stab wounds to the left side of his chest. Cold case investigators suspect it may have been the work of a serial killer known as the “Skid Row Slasher."

1958: Little Miss X

Coconino County Sheriff Cecil Richardson and Deputy Johnny Ortiz look over the case file of Little Miss X. The girl's unclothed skeletal remains were found Oct. 31, 1958 off a dirt road on Skinner Ridge south of Grand Canyon National Park. Investigators never determined her identity or who killed her.

1957: Mary Margaret Begay

A view of the Grand Canyon Inn in the 1960s, a few years after Mary Margaret Begay, an employee at the park, went missing. She was last seen drinking with friends at the inn one day in August 1957. According to one of the friends, Begay got into a vehicle with two unknown Hopi men and was never seen again.
