People in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, near the Black Sea, are braced for further Russian attacks, after airstrikes on Sunday in which nine people were killed. An abandoned naval yard, once home to lavish navy balls, has been converted into a centre to support the Ukrainian military. Inside volunteers were busy preparing food and sorting out clothes for Ukrainian fighters who have been putting up stiffer than expected resistance to Russian attacks. Outside the city's morgue, bodies were seen covered by plastic bags. The morgue itself is full, a grim reminder of the war's mounting death toll. Russia and Ukraine kept a fragile diplomatic path open with a new round of talks Monday even as Moscow's troops continued to attack Kyiv and other cities across the country.
