Researchers have created a new lens designed to combat myopia, also known as nearsightedness. In this disease, the eyeball lengthens excessively and adopts an oval shape from its regular round shape. As a result, distant objects appear hazy. Researchers from the ZEISS Vision Science Lab at the University of Tübingen, in Germany and the University of Murcia, in Spain may have found a fix. The new lens will evaluate how well specialist eyeglass lenses focus light, potentially resulting in more effective treatments for the ailment. In U.S. alone, myopia affects over 40% of the population, up from the 25% reported in the 1970s. While contact lenses for myopia have been effective in the past, they aren’t appropriate for everyone, especially children. Reports suggest that half of the world’s population will suffer from myopia by 2050. Therefore these smart glasses could be a game changer in slowing the progression of vision loss.
