Ask The Vet: Protecting your dogs from rattlesnakes

Ask the Vet

Q: My neighbor's dog was bitten recently by a rattlesnake, and I'm terrified that one of my dogs will also get bitten! How can I protect my dogs, and what should I do if they get bitten?

A: Now that the weather is warming up, snakes are more prevalent, and dogs who confront snakes can get bitten. Bites by poisonous snakes are extremely serious because the venom destroys tissue and damages the nervous system. But even a bite by a non-poisonous snake is dangerous since it can cause severe infection and other problems.
