On a sunny Sunday morning in late February, two dozen aspiring firefighters gathered at the Flagstaff Fire Department’s Station 3 on Nestle-Purina Avenue. Standing around the table of the briefing room, they listened to firefighter Blake Armstrong describe the planned workout for the day, designed to challenge their motivation.
“You’re going to have to quit, at some point,� Armstrong said. “What’s going to keep you going another 10 feet?�
