Letter to the Editor: Remembering the day WWII ended in Germany

Letters

May 8, 1945, was a momentous day; the end of World War II in Europe, 80 years ago. I was 6 years old and remember it well. It was a beautiful spring day in Germany, and I knew I was going to live. No more hiding in the basement, cowering when the whining of bombs became louder and louder until they exploded nearby. No more covering your head under a mattress to shelter it from falling bricks. No more talk about being plastered against a wall, buried by debris or consumed by fire. I was not going to die. I was going to live.
