Columbia plans to deport 70 of Pablo Escobar’s ‘cocaine hippos to sanctuaries in India and Mexico. In the late 1980s, drug lord Pablo Escobar had a small number of hippopotamuses imported to his property in Hacienda Nápoles. After his death in 1993, the herd was left behind and quickly reproduced to a population of over 130 and left the confines of the ranch. As the hippos are not native to the area, they began terrorizing the local residents and ecosystem, with two recorded assaults in 2021. Other attempts at population control have been tried, including sterilization and open hunting. These were largely unsuccessful, as the reproduction rate of the hippo population was too rapid to control. The current plan is to lure the animals into iron cages where they can be transported to sanctuaries, 60 to India, and 10 to Mexico. Environmental experts agree that it is a necessary solution to the sharp increase of the invasive species.
