We would like to thank Mayor Daggett for Proclaiming Aug. 26-30 SMART Week. We appreciate your support in spreading the message and importance of secure gun storage to prevent gun violence. Secure gun storage is one of the smartest things adults can do to protect children, classrooms and communities from gun violence. We’ve seen time and again that when guns aren’t properly stored, tragedy can strike whether it’s a child finding a firearm and injuring or killing themselves or someone else, or someone stealing it and using it to commit crime. Tragically, guns are the leading cause of death for children and teens in America, surpassing motor vehicle accidents. The gold standard for secure gun storage is to keep them unloaded, locked up and stored separately from ammunition.
SMART Week is a communitywide effort. Change happens every day through meaningful conversation with friends, family, neighbors and community leaders. Let’s normalize conversations about gun safety and remember that hiding a gun is not securing a gun. SMART stands for: Secure guns in cars and homes, Model responsible behavior around guns, Ask about the presence of unsecured firearms in other homes your child visits, Recognize the role of guns in suicide, and Tell your peers to Be SMART for kids. .
