A year ago, I told former Flagstaff Live! writer Gabriel Granillo that I believed in the beauty and power of art. A year ago, Granillo gave me the go-ahead to seek out artists and talk to them, sometimes for hours, about their work and how they can share their practice with people who are learning these skills. I’m only allotted a certain amount of space in this column, and often it feels like it’s not enough to capture how an artist speaks about their work—I can never quite relay the twinkle in their eyes or the excitement in their voice.

“Artists are important. It’s not just teachers or already established institutional things that make art. It’s all of us working together. Artists are just community members like everyone else. We may not all react the same, but we try our best to foster and engage [artists]. You never know what a painting or a piece of music is going to do to somebody. It could be something special and until you try it you don’t know, Andres Adauto says.
