Gardening Etcetera: The predator-prey relationship between cats and native birds

I like cats. When we were growing up, my brother Greg and I liked cats so much that we bought a pure-bred Siamese kitten, wrapped it in a cardboard box, put a lovely bow on top, and gave it to our mother for her birthday. We doted on “Sake through all of his nine lives.

When Sake wasn’t shadowing me throughout the house (for some reason he latched onto me more than the others), he was roaming the neighborhood. My family’s perspective was that it’s natural for cats to roam, because it was instinctual. If a cat killed a few birds, that’s the way it was meant to be.
