Letter to the Editor: 'I think Rep. Crane owes us all an explanation'

Letters

I am on Rep. Crane’s newsletter mailing list and have often been confused by the positions he has taken, but his decision to vote in favor of the current budget bill is totally unfathomable. One of the main principles he has always espoused is the need to reduce the country’s deficit. Under the Biden administration, Rep. Crane voted against every budget bill and continuing resolution. Yet he voted in favor of the current bill, which adds considerably to the deficit ($2.4 trillion according to the Congressional Budget Office). In his May 30 newsletter, Rep. Crane calls people voting for the bill to task saying “Squishy Republicans won't trim the fat out of the budget In all seriousness, Congress must get our fiscal house in order. We’re running out of time. Perhaps this is a “note to self or he is one of the many Republicans now saying they didn’t actually have time to read the bill before voting for it.

Regardless, Rep. Crane voted for a bill that will add to the deficit mostly to fund tax cuts that will primarily benefit the ultra-rich and corporations. It would be adding even more to the deficit if the bill didn’t include cost cuts to programs that Rep. Crane has promised would be off limits to cuts (i.e. Medicaid, which is specifically cut, and Medicare, which will automatically be cut when the deficit increases).
