Letter to the Editor: National Park Service supporter says time to speak out is now

Letters

The existence of your national parks was not inevitable. We could have easily lived in a timeline where the Grand Canyon was drowned by giant reservoirs, where redwoods are only stumps and memories, or where Yellowstone was broken into increasingly tiny parcels and the idea of the national park died in its infancy. These places exist today because of people who advocated for them.

In my career in the national parks, I grew accustomed to bipartisan neglect. The National Park Service (NPS) has a miniscule budget and generates $15 for every $1 appropriated by Congress. Despite this, budgets and staffing kept getting cut while visitation soared.
