Coconino Voices: National MMIP Day brings attention to violence against Indigenous persons in Flagstaff

May 5 is National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP), a reminder of the violence that impacts Indigenous women, girls, and their relatives an issue that continues to affect many communities, including Flagstaff.

Arizona is part of the highest number of MMIW cases in the country. A 2017 report from the Urban Indian Health Institute documented 54 cases statewide, including Flagstaff. Not only does the number reported count for those that were documented but experts point to gaps in data collection and jurisdictional challenges between tribal, local, and state authorities making it difficult to know how many cases there truly are. Data shows that domestic violence can be a precursor to missing persons and homicide violence cases.
