View from Mars Hill: March 13: A date of astronomical wonders and a total lunar eclipse

Lunar Eclipse

A montage of the various stages of a total lunar eclipse, captured during a January 2018 eclipse.

What do Uranus, Pluto, and an awe-inspiring celestial event have in common? They all converge on the iconic date of March 13.

On this day in 1781, William Herschel discovered Uranus. It’s also the birthdate of Percival Lowell in 1855 and the day Lowell Observatory announced Pluto’s discovery in 1930. Adding to this legacy, the first total lunar eclipse since 2022 will grace the nighttime skies before the clock strikes midnight tonight.
